All three British species of woodpecker live in the wood as well as nuthatches and treecreepers. The springtime there is a carpet of bluebells and primroses. Many different warblers nest on the reserve.

RSPB Broadwater Warren

Set in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty near to Royal Tunbridge Wells, Broadwater Warren is a large conifer plantation with a few remnants of heathland surviving. The RSPB are restoring the area to its original habitat of a wildlife-rich mosaic of heathland and native woodland species with some clumps of pines, a wet woodland, a rare woodland mire and forest ponds.

Bedgebury Forest

One of the best sites for Hawfinch in the south-east and usually 30-50 birds can be seen flying in to roost in the cypress trees between late November and early March. The area attracts Brambling, Lesser Redpoll and Siskin in winter. Long-eared Owl can be sighted in winter.
